· Sumy State University was founded in 1948. Today the students of the University are trained in more than 30 specialties. The academic and practical training complex which includes more than 20 educational institutions was developed on the basis of the University.
About 500 lecturers work at University’s chairs including 45 Professors and Doctors of Science, 300 Associate Professors and Candidates of Sciences. The University has close scientific relations with research centres of the Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, different universities of Austria, Great Britain, Germany, Sweden, the USA, Hungary, Poland, Czech Republic, CIS.
SSU is a member of International Association of Universities (IAU), European Association of International Education (EAIE), International Union of Business Economy, and International Society of Engineers. World level scientific schools work at the University. SSU has close scientific and educational contacts with scores of American, European and Asian universities. The leading scientific workers are the international academies’ current members, honored Soros professors and associate professors; they are awarded with international grants.
The University has sufficiently close contacts with foreign educational institutions. Besides the SSU students are dispatched abroad to continue their study at magistracy and post-graduate study, for study and for doing their manufacturing practical work in the foreign academic institutions.
 Traditionally the students of SSU win a lot of prize places among the classical Universities at the Universal Ukrainian student Olympiads. Young scholars and talented students get the grants from the President of Ukraine, Cabinet of Ministers and the local government.
SSU graduates work in 15 countries of the world.
Sumy State University has its contacts with Ukrainian enterprises including the Sumy Region enterprises to which the students are assigned .
The practice of state assignment of graduates who study on budgetary places has remained. After the graduating from the University 95 % of graduates who study on the budget places are assigned to their work, those graduates who study on the contract basis are assigned at request.
SSU is an educational, scientific and cultural regional centre. The professors and students are actively occupied with a regional work, with a revival of Ukrainian national traditions and with the enlargement of the Ukrainian language sphere of usage. The collection of scientific works “ Visnyk SumDu”, popular scientific collection “Sums’ka Sterovyna” are published at the University, fundamental encyclopedic reference book “Sumschchina”is ready for publication, University annually conducts scores of cultural and educational arrangements among the youth and regional inhabitants.
