The section of neurology, neurosurgery and psychiatry was founded on September 1, 1999 composed of the chair of propedeutics of internal medicine (the chair had been headed by Professor Ivan D. Rachinsky). In 2002 the chair was reorganized in Chair of Dermatovenerology (the chair had been headed by Professor Vasily A. Bocharov).

The Chair of Neurosurgery and Neurology with Courses of Psychiatry, Dermatovenerology, Occupational diseases, Immunology and Allergology was founded on 1 January, 2005. The head of the chair: Doctor of Medical Science, professor Olexander O. Potapov.

The basis of the chair is the Regional Clinical Hospital, 4^th Municipal Clinical Hospital, Regional Psychoneurological Dispensary and Regional Dermatovenerology Dispensary.

Educational Activity

Members of the chair staff constantly improve their methodical and educational activity. The chair gives theoretical knowledge and practical skills to IV, V, VI years students and to internship doctors by Ukrainian, Russian and English. They study the following disciplines: “Neurosurgery”, “Neurology”, “Psychiatry”, “Dermatovenerology”, “Occupational Diseases”, “Immunology”, “Allergology”. In training course were introduced new training techniques. It was developed teaching and monitoring computer programs. Computers tests totally fit with modern standards on doctors’ training. Situational tasks and test questions in all topics for practical classes were elaborated. In 1998 was opened clinical residensy for ukrainian and foreign doctors. It was issued a whole number of methodological instructions, teaching aids for students and physicians. The students were winners of All-Ukrainian Olympiads in neurology, psychiatry, immunology and allergology under the direction of assistant-professors Faina G. Kolenko, Oksana I. Kolenko, Arcady V. Kustov.

Fields of scientific Interests

Chair staff researches the following scientific problems:

• Impact of factors of environment on the health;
• Cerebrovascular diseases;
• Head injury;
• Pain syndromes;
• Boundary psychiatry diseases

More then 200 scientific works of chair lectures were published in journals and 1 patent for invention have been received. Since 2005 two Candidate theses were defended and 1 Candidate theses are going to be defended in the nearest future.

Students’ Scientific Society was founded on September, 1998. Students’ academic papers were laureates of All-Ukrainian Scientific competitions.

Every year students and lectures takes part in International and All-Ukrainian conferences, congresses, symposiums of young scientists.

Medical activity

The chair collaborators give consultative and medical help on the basis of the 4^th Municipal Clinical Hospital, Regional Clinical Hospital, Regional Psychoneurological Department and other patient care institutions of Sumy and Sumy Region. Scientific and practical conferences for the regional doctors are constantly carried out. Clinical and scientific conferences, seminars raising the skill level of the regional physicians with the aim of introducing new prophylaxis, diagnostics and treatment methods.
