The chair of obstetrics and gynaecology was founded on February 19, 1996 under the direction of Prof. Zhernovaya Y. S., D.M. and it included 3 lecturers: Candidate of Medical Sciences, Assistant Sukharev A.B., and Assistants Smiyan S.A. and Semeniuk L.L., who defended their Candidate theses the next year and have received scientific degree of Candidate of Medical Science.

Since 1998 Candidate of Medical Sciences Smiyan S.A., and Candidate of Medical Sciences Sukharev A.B., have acquired the posts of Assistant Professors.

Since 1998 Candidates of Medical Science Andzheyevska V.A., Seminiuk L.S. and Verzhanskiy P.S. have been taken to the chair staff on the positions of Assistant Professors.

Educational Activity

The chair teaches 4th, 5th and 6th year students of the medical faculty the following disciplines: “Obstetrics” (4th courses), “Gynaecology” (5th course) and “Obstetrics and Gynaecology” (6th course). The material and technical basis of the chair was created for the first time and equipped with technical educational aids. Educational activity is being constantly improved. Such new technologies as brainstorm, business clinical games, midwifery and gyenaecology algorithms, self-educational computer programs (3500 tests), computer testing (basic, mass and final) and module-and-rating system are introduced into the educational process. Three educational textbooks were published with the stamp of the Ministry of Health Protection of Ukraine with the purpose of bringing an academic: process.

• “Caesarean Section in Modern Obstetrics” (Zhernovaya Y., Verzhanskiy P.),
• “Clinical Examination in Obstetrics and Gynaecology” (Andzheyevska V.).

36 volumes of educational-methodical works, tips for students and doctors and 39 works concerning educational-methodical activity problems were published. 4 clinical interns, among them 3 foreign ones graduated from the chair. 4 clinical interns continue their education.

Field of Scientific Interests

Taking into consideration unfavourable ecosystem of Sumy region, members of the chair staff carry out researches on the "perinatal aspects of infection of foetus" and peculiarities of women reproductive and sexual health under difficult environment conditions. 232 scientific works were published by the chair lecturers and 74 of them were published during their work at the SSU. The lecturers partook in 8 International and 13 Ukrainian congresses, conventions and conferences. They have got the bronze medal and honorary International title of Reproductologist (Zhernovaya Y.). There is a scientific students group at the chair aimed at future specialists training. About 20 students partake in it annually. Students take part in republican olympiads, International congresses and win the first places. 32 articles were published and 44 reports on finishing chair conferences were made.

Major Scientific Achievements of the Chair

• 1 thesis for the Doctor’s degree was defended (Zhernovaya Y.S. - 1996).
• 3 Candidate theses was defended (Smiyan S. - 1996, Seminiuk L. - 1997 and Pyshkina L. – 1999).
• 2 monographs was published (Zhernovaya Y.S.).
• 32 scientific reviews were sent to the Specialized Academic Councils of Kharkov, Kiev and Odessa.
• Women reproductive and sexual health by endocrine sterility were thoroughly and comprehensively examined.
• Perinatal aspects of infection of foetus.
• Integrative approach to health reproductivity problems was investigated and introduced.
• Hirudotherapy at sterility treatment was introduced.
• Preventive measures of midwifery bleeding were elaborated.
• Integrative prophylaxis methods of puerperal and purulent and septic diseases were worked out and introduced.
• 74 scientific works were published.
• The 2nd place was won in a republican contest (student Goryachiy S.O., 1998).
• Honorary Diploma of the first degree had been received in the V International Students and Young Scientists Conference (Sepyk I.Y.).

Medical Activity of the Chair

Professor and Assistant Professors carry out morning doctor’s conferences, rounds, clinical examinations in the departments of the Regional Clinical Maternity Hospital and also provide consulting activity daily. Moreover, Professor and Assistant Professors are constantly engaged in urgent help on the clinical basis and in the region. Prof. Zhernovaya Y.S. made 16 departures and gave an urgent help in different clinical city and region institutes. Assistants and clinical interns provide medical activity at the Maternity Hospital departments. The night duty is constantly carried out in the Maternity Hospital. The departures on the sanatorium aviation also take place constantly here. Perinatal consultations and consultations on maternity help and anatomico-pathological conferences are constantly conducted. 17 new diagnostics and treatment methods were introduced into health protection practice.
