History of the department

The advent of the department of pediatrics postgraduate education courses and PP and CI is closely linked to sustained growth and development of the Medical Faculty of Sumy State University. The origins of our department lie in 1994, when on base of Sumy City Children's Hospital at first came medical students to study the course "Propedevtik of childhood diseases”. In that time the chair was named chair of childhood diseases, and its skeleton were present teachers. These were the candidate of medical sciences, the senior lecturer A.I. Smiyan, assistants - candidate of medical sciences T.P. Bynda, candidate of medical sciences S.V. Popov, candidate of medical sciences P.I. Sichnenko. First head of the department was Professor Vitaly Eduardovich Markevich.

Students studied "Propedevtik of childhood diseases with the course of care". In the town's hospital was slightly cathedrals facilities, training sessions were conducted in a game room offices. But the relationship with doctors and with the chief doctor - at the time, M.O. Artyuh - were good. The difficulties that arosed, resolved quickly. Employees of the Department immediately engaged in practical activities: consult, manage patients, on duty in the resuscitation department and receive in-office diagnostic Regional Children's Hospital, thus increasing theirs level of expertise.

In 1995, the department has increased the number of employees. After the defense to receive degree candidate of medical sciences as assistants became to work O.K. Redko and I.E. Zaitsev. In 1998, defended his thesis and has been credited as assistant O. K. Romanyuk.

This was made possible after the 1996 Alexander Smiyan completed the scientific work for a degree of Doctor of Medical Sciences and received shortly for this title of professor. His work - "Endocrine and morphofunctional mechanisms of adaptation of premature newborns with late foetal growth and development in the early neonatal period" - was devoted to pathology of one of the most problematic groups of children, the relevance of treatment and diagnosis of which is constantly growing. Laws has been following allocation of the department of children's diseases at the department of pediatrics ¹1 and pediatrics ¹ 2 in the 1999. Head of the first department became Professor A. I. Smiyan. In addition to his staff the newly created department at that time was assistant professor T. P. Bynda, assistant, candidate of medical sciences, O.K. Romanyuk and assistant O.V. Markevich. In the same 1999 began teaching the subject of "Childrens infection" for students 5 and 6 courses. Intensive work to ensure the teaching of new subjects under the leadership of Professor O.I. Smiyan held Associate Professor T.P. Bynda. She was virtually re-mastered new speciality of children's infektsionist.
