The strategy and tactics of the scientific activity of the SSU medical faculty members are determined by scientific and practical requirements of the regional medicine. During the last years specailized schools were formed and are working now effectively. They are: schools of paediatrists (V.E. Markievich, Prof.; O.I. Smiyan, Prof.), therapeutists (V.Ph. Orlovskiy, Prof.; I.D. Rachinskiy, Prof.), surgeons and traumatologists (M.G. Kononenko, Prof.; I.D. Duzhiy, Prof.; V.D. Shishchuk, Assistant Professor), morphologists (V.Z. Sikora, Prof.; A.M. Romaniuk, Prof.), obstetrician and gynaecologists (Y.S. Zhernova, Prof.), physiologists, pathophysiologists, microbiologists, biochemists, pharmacologists (O.V. Ataman Prof.; M.M. Kaplin, Prof.; I.Y. Visotzkiy, Assistant Professor), sanitarians (K.K. Vasiliev, Prof.; A.G. Dyachenko, Prof.), infectionists (Z.Y. Krasovitzkiy, Prof.; M.D. Chemich, Assistant Professor).

The works of the collectives headed by the aforenamed people are well known throughout Ukraine and abroad. During 10 years of the faculty existence 6 theses for Doctor's degree (Smiyan O.I., Mardar G.I., Zhernova Ya.S., Orlovskiy V.Ph., Duzhiy I.D., Potapov O.O.) and 19 Ph.D. theses (Bocharova O.A., Smiyan S.A., Snitsar A.O., Semenyuk L.A., Pristupa L.N., Kondrachuk S.O., Laba V.V., Pyatykop G.I., Klymanska N.V., Melechovets O.K., Zaitsev I.E., Zagorodniy M.P., Zhuravel N.V., Romaniuk O.K., Pilipets I.V., Loza S.I., Kavare V.I., Karpenko L.I., Kiptenko L.I.) were defended.

The researchers of the faculty work on the theme “ Research of Adult and Children Population Health of the Sumy Region under Adverse Environment Conditions”. The theme is urgent for practical protection of health of the citizens of Sumy and Sumy region and for medical science. A specialized magazine "Visnyk of SSU" series “Medicine” is published for popularization of scientific achievements of the collaborators of the faculty.

Scientific researches are aimed at:

• modern methods of treatment of sick children from the polluted regions of Sumy region;
• preventive measures of tuberculosis;
• morphologic evidences of organs and tissues damage development under the influence of pernicious habits;
• methods of surgical treatment;
• treatment of the gastrointestinal tract diseases;
• preventive measures and sterility treatment.

Scientific and practical conferences are regularly organized at the medical faculty. The reports are given by leading scientists, candidates for degrees, post-graduates, practical doctors, clinical interns and students who are engaged in scientific research at the chairs of theoretical and clinical orientation. The scientists of the faculty constantly take part in scientific forums of state and international levels. In particular Professors Markevitch V.E., Vasiliev K.K., Romaniuk A.M., Sikora V.Z., Zhernova Ya.S., Smiyan O.I., Dyachenko A.G. were invited to European and international scientific forums where they gave reports on the up-to-date problems of the modern medicine. Scientific progress of the young scientists of the faculty has been approved at the state level. The assistants P’yatykop G., Grebennik L., Bocharova O. received a grant from the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine.

A student scientific society functions effectively at the chair. There are circles where students do research work at every chair. The contribution of the student scientific society to the achievements grows annually. Students are engaged into active scientific work from the first days of study. Talented youth make its first steps on the difficult path of scientific researches under the control of their major instructors who are the leading scientists of the faculty. The high level of scientific works of your young scientists ensures prize places in the Ukrainian medical contests, approvals and constant interest at the world conferences and congresses. They are Sepyk I., Butko V., Naumets R. and Pylypets I. Student scientific works are regularly presented to the state contests, the contests organized by the National Medical Academy. According to the results of such contests the student Babich B. won a prize place in the contest among the best research works on dermatology and venerology in Kyiv.

The students who take an active part in the student scientific society have a possibility to prolong their education after graduating from the University in a clinical internal course or at post-graduate courses in the chosen speciality. Over 25 native and foreign citizens study at post-graduate courses and in a clinical internal studies at the faculty every year. Among the first graduates of the faculty there are post-graduates and clinical interns who have defended Ph.D. theses (I.V. Pylypets) or those who are finishing working at dissertations.

It has already become a tradition to take part in the annual International Medical Congresses of the students and young scientists due to which friendly relationship becomes stronger between the students of our faculty and medical higher educational establishment of Ukraine (Ternopil, Kharkiv, Lugansk, Odesa, Kyiv and others).
