Science and Research at the Sumy State University

Scientific activity at the Sumy State University (SSU) is realized in six orientations, which are considered to be the most important and fit with specialties:

  1. Production and optimization of:
    • innovatory workflows;
    • progressive methods of material processing;
    • automatic lines, equipment, machines and tools for engineering industry.
  2. Ecological problems of the applied chemistry. Elaboration of progressive technology and equipment for chemical industry.
  3. Environmental ecological and economic problems and its protection.
  4. Elaboration of simulators, methods and algorithms of the processes of designing and optimization of complex systems.
  5. Fundamental investigations in physics and mathematics.
  6. Investigation of immunity peculiarities of children, which live in environmentally unfavorable terrains.

The whole cycle of research is brought about at the university – from fundamental investigation to manufacturing application.

The SSU academicians, students, post-graduate students and other members of the staff carry out scientific researches. It’s about 95% of all academicians, 16-20% of students, and about 120 members of the staff.

48 departments, 15 problem laboratories (including one applied-research laboratory and two intersectorial laboratories) take part in scientific researches.

Science and research at the SSU are financed by:

  • State budget (on the competitive basis);
  • Economic treaties with enterprises and organizations in Sumy, region, Ukraine, and foreign countries.

The total annual volume of scientific research in period 1997-2002 is 600-1000 thousand grivnas. 65-73% of all researches are financed by economic treaties (55-73% of which are enterprises of Ukraine and Sumy region).

The SSU provides highly-qualified specialists training:

  • post-graduate course (in 26 specialties);
  • clinical residency (in 14 specialties);
  • adjunct course (in 3 specialties);
  • course for Doctor’s degree (in 5 specialties).

3 specialized academic councils in 7 specialties function at the SSU.

8 scientific schools well known in Ukraine and beyond its borders were organized at the SSU.

They are: “Economic problems of environmental protection”, scientific supervisor - honored member of science and technology of Ukraine, Doctor of economic sciences, Prof. O.F. Balatsky; “Elaboration of theory and new methods of material processing”, scientific supervisor – Prof. V.O. Zaloga; “ Investigation and creation of pumping equipment for power engineering, oil and chemical industry”, scientific supervisor – Prof. I.O. Kovalyov; “Creation of new high-performance spacers for machine rotors”, scientific supervisor – honored member of science and technology of Ukraine, Doctor of technical sciences, Prof. V.A. Martsynkovsky; “Interaction of physical fields in strained solids”, scientific supervisor – Doctor of physico-mathematical sciences, Prof. L.A. Filshtynsky; “Creation of equipment for chemical industry”, scientific supervisor – the State prize of Ukraine winner, Doctor of technical sciences, Prof. B.G. Kholin; “The theory of unbalanced condensed media”, scientific supervisor – Doctor of physico-mathematical sciences, Prof. O.I. Olemskoy; “Nonlinear resonance wave processes in plasma of relativistic electronic systems” , scientific supervisor – Doctor of physico-mathematical sciences, Prof. V.V. Kulish.

15 problem laboratories have been founded at the university. Among them there are the intersectorial laboratory of hydro-dynamic drives and units ( scientific supervisor – Prof. I.O. Kovalyov), the intersectorial laboratory of computerized education technologies (scientific supervisor – r. V.O. Lyubchak); the applied-research laboratory of problems of electro-physical instrument-making industry for scientific needs in the system of Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine (scientific supervisor – r. V.A. Khvorost); problem laboratory of granulation equipment (scientific supervisor – Doctor of technical sciences, Prof. B.G. Kholin), problem laboratory of highly productive processes of material processing and machines (scientific supervisor – Prof. V.A. Zaloga), problem laboratory of hermiticity and vibro-safety of centrifugal machines (scientific supervisor – Doctor of technical sciences, Prof. V.A. Martsynkovsky) and others.

On the basis of the SSU fundamental investigations different innovatory technologies, machines and units are designed, produced and applied in industry. At the university there is an appropriate material and technical basis for this purpose. For example, the university has a leading position in the field of design of granulation equipment for the production of mineral fertilizers. Vibro-granulators for the production of carbamide and ammonium nitrate, designed and produced by the laboratory of granulation equipment are installed at the plants in Ukraine, Russia, other countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States and also in Poland, Bulgaria, and Qatar. The highly efficient spacers for rotors of centrifugal machines including pump turbines are designed at the laboratory of hermiticity and vibro-safety of centrifugal machines The scientists of the laboratory also work on the improvement problem of centrifugal machines vibro-safety and the design of vibro-diagnostic systems. They are designed and provided to atomic power stations in Ukraine and Russia. Pumping equipment for pumping of contaminated liquids, granulators, slurry desiccators, cutting equipment and tools, plants for coatication of protecting and decorative coating on metals and ceramics, wind power plants of various capacities, rollfree centrifugal pumps, absorbers for gas sweetening and many others are designed at the SSU.

The university has close relations with institutes of thermal physics, metal physics, cybernetic, hardness problems, machine-building problems, extra-hard materials, material authority institute of National Academy of Science of Ukraine, institute of microbiology and immunology named after Mechnikov of Academy of Medical Science of Ukraine and others.

In the SSU over 1200 economic treaties have been satisfied, over 1500 engineering solutions in the form of inventions have been proposed, over 780 patents have been received. Almost 50 SSU patents operate in Ukraine nowadays.

Annually about 1000 works by the members of the university are published in scientific issues.

In 1996 on the basis of the SSU due to the decision of Regional state administration the regional center of scientific-technical and patent information was founded. Annually over 1100 specialists of regional organizations and enterprises use its services.

4-7 times a year international scientific conferences, dealing with problems of nature management, hermiticity technique, spectroscopy of molecules and crystals, philosophy, infectious diseases, translation and others take place at the SSU.

Scientists from Ukraine, other countries of the Commonwealth of Independent States, Poland, Germany, Hungary, England, Japan, Canada, the USA, Belgium and others take part in those conferences.

Since 1994 the periodical scientific magazine “Visnyk Sums’kogo Derzhavnogo Universytetu” has been published at the SSU. Its series are technical sciences (machine building, automation, electronics, informatics); medicine; economics; physics, mathematics, mechanics, philological sciences.

Since 1997 the scientific journals in the history and culture of Ukraine have been issued. They are "Sumska Starovyna", "Encyclopaedia of the Sumy region" which contain the information about scientists whose life and scientific work are related to the Sumy region.

Since 2001 the Sumy State University has been a participant of the technological park "Institute of monocrystals".

The university has much experience in the international co-operation. It is a participant of international associations, societies and scientific funds. Among them there are International Association of Universities, International Fund "Revival", European Association of International Education, International Union of Ecological Economy, International Academy of Informatization, International scientific programmes INTAS, TESOL, IAFETEL – professional organizations of foreign language teachers, International Engineering Partnership, European Association of Assistance to Exact Sciences and others.

Every year the names of prominent scientists of the university are brought into the reference book "Who is Who in the World".

The university scientists' achievements obtain recognition and get State Prizes of Ukraine in the field of science and techniques, the Prizes of National Academy of Science, honorary ranks.
